Michael Winkleman talks about the 'drug paradox' and evolutionary adaptations of humans to psychoactive plants, the integrative mode of consciousness and psychedelics as 'psychointegrators', psychedelic drugs as sources of rare neurotransmitters, the role of ritual practises to enhance the psychoactive effects of plants, the evolutionary history of the relationship between humans and psychoactive plants, serotonin and opioid receptors in the human brain, serotonergic binding, shamanism as a tool for integrating communities by enhancing opioid bonding, cognitive capabilities that are unique to human beings, mystical experiences induced by long-distance running, dancing to induce altered states of consciousness and the role of dancing for animals, human relationship to fungi and the worldwide distribution of neurotropic fungi, the mystical effects of psilocybe mushrooms including travelling to other dimensions cathartic healing and the ego death/rebirth experience, the concordance of DMT/psilocybin experiences and shamanism, promotion of altruistic activity by psychedelics, the roots of shamanism in chimpanzee behaviour, similarities of psychedelic experiences to meditative experiences, alternative means of altering consciousness besides psychedelics such as shamanic drumming and chanting, synchronized theta waves in the brain during psychedelic experiences, the ineffability of ltered states of consciousness, the reducing valve of consciousness and opening up the lower part of the brain with psychedelics, the tolerance effect that comes with frequent usage of psychedelics, enhanced learning with psychedelics and the psychedelic influence on human evolution.
