In wikipedia says it is psychoactive (hallucinogenic), but it fails to mention the active substance. Any ideas on this one ?
It is a very common fruit...easily grown from seed.

I don't think solanine is hallucinogenic .... its in potato and tomato plants as well... I don't know if there are other alkaloids, but it doesn't matter, eating ground cherry will make you very ill - I would advise you *not* to try it.

could you supply the link that says there are hallucinogens?

of course:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physalis

Check out the second paragraph counting from the bottom of the article. If I tried every thing that it is hallucinogenic, i would had my stomach filled with daturas. Simple curiosity, since this genus is rarely mentioned.

I don't know if physalis have other alkaloids, but they do have solanine as far as I know....

Thank you for your help, people like this are becoming an endangered species. I didn't know about solanine, i'll check everything (and perhaps a little more) about it.

Ground cherries will NOT make you ill. I currently have a bunch in front of me and have many patients that eat them.
