[h=5]Synthetic drugs, commonly sold as "incense," "bath salts," and "plant food" (pictured), have dramatically increased in popularity over the last few years. Now, researchers at the Scripps Research Institute have found that the synthetic stimulant 3,4-methylenedioxypyrovalerone (MPDV) may be more addictive than methamphetamines. In a new study in Neuropsychopharmacology, researchers at Scripps tested the addictive effects of MPDV by allowing animals to self-administer the drug by pressing a lever, which delivered MPDV through an IV. The rats would press the lever 60 times for a hit of meth, but the researchers found that the rats would press the lever up to 600 times for MPDV, indicating it could be ten times more addictive than meth. Researchers say they need to evaluate the addictive potential of other drugs similar to MPDV, as well as evaluating their toxicity.
