[Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's invitation to address the UN conference has caused controversy]
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's invitation to address the UN conference has caused controversy

Western delegates have staged a mass walkout at the UN anti-racism conference in Geneva after Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad launched an attack on Israel during his address this afternoon.

After beginning with a history of slavery and colonialism, the Iranian president turned to the establishment of the Israeli state.

He said the move "made an entire nation homeless under the pretext of Jewish suffering and... helped bring to power the most cruel, repressive and racist regime in Palestine".

A significant number of delegates walked out immediately although there was enthusiastic applause from other areas of the hall.

As the president rose to speak, two protesters in multi-coloured wigs were bundled out of the hall by security after heckling Mr Ahmadinejad. One appeared to throw something at the speaker's lectern, while a red point from a laser pen flashed across the president's chest.

And before his remarks about Israel, Mr Ahmadinejad embarrassed his hosts by ridiculing the idea of the veto powers enjoyed by the UN security council.

He asked: "How can we expect the realisation of justice and peace when international law is dominated by coercion and force rather than justice?"

After leaving the hall, the French foreign minister Bernard Kouchner said: "The defence of human rights and the fight against all types of racism are too important for the United Nations not to unite against all forms of hate speech, against all perversion of this message.

"Faced with attitudes like that which the Iranian president has just adopted, no compromise is possible."

Earlier the UN secretary general had spoken out against the countries boycotting the UN anti-racism conference in Geneva because of concerns surrounding Mr Ahmadinejad's speech.

It had been feared the Iranian president would use his speech to reiterate his controversial views about Israel and the Holocaust. Israel has recalled its ambassador from Geneva after the Swiss foreign minister met with Mr Ahmadinejad yesterday.

Opening the convention, Ban Ki-moon had said: "There comes a time in the affairs of humankind when we must stand firm on the fundamental principles that binds us.

"There comes a time to reaffirm our faith in fundamental human rights and dignity and worth of us all, a time to give the virtues of tolerance in respect for diversity their fullest due and look beyond a past that divides us towards a future that unites us. The time is now, ladies and gentleman. The time is now."

The United States withdrew on Saturday with president Barack Obama citing the "hypocritical and counterproductive" language used in the draft resolution. On the insistence of some Middle East countries, a clause was inserted in the draft document opposing the inciting of religious hatred, which some see as an attack on freedom of expression.

Germany, Australia, Italy, the Netherlands and New Zealand have all since followed the US example. Canada and Israel have made it clear for some months they would not be attending.

The UK sent a representation but with no senior official present.

The UN had been hoping the Geneva meeting would pass off more smoothly than its first anti-racism conference held in Durban in 2001, where there were accusations of anti-Semitism levelled at certain NGOs and an unsuccessful attempt by some states to have Zionism condemned as a racist doctrine."

What do you think of that? My mind is set...

I haven't read the resolution, so I don't know what all the fuss is about, but I think that the people being counterproductive are rather those that walk out or choose not to attend. Calling something anti-semitism when it is critical of crimes against humanity is counterproductive. This boycott shows the true face of the west, claiming to defend human rights, but so far not defending the rights of those humans that claims something they oppose.

agreed, walking out like that, welll, it's childish behavior. neither side is clean when it comes to human rights, neither side can speak about human rights without coming off like complete hypocrites, to them "human rights" is just another tool to push their own political agendas.

of course, since some of the major players never bothered to show up in the first place (read, most 'civilized' western nations) it's hard to say what good this meeting is in the first place.

I agree with the last two posts .

There wasnt a mass walk out . Some of the members of the EU walked out . The most of the delegates stayed . The reason that there is so much fuss being made is because at the first part of the conference in Durban the most participants talked about the israeli rasism , discrimination and the apartheid in Palastine .

I totaly agree with the iranian president and think that the response from israel and its partners proves that they are not interested in law and fairness , all they are interested in is domination .

yes exactly my thoughts. I think the iranian president grabbed the Europeans by their balls and they didn't like that at all. Some of them are still traumatized from WWII and some are just paid by the US. A detail that proves that this comment wasn't racist at all is that he critisized the israeli government and not the jews.

Pity.

UN is a laugh.

Nice opportunity for the attending politicians to get a hooker in their hotel room.

Most Palestinians and Israelis willing to accept two-state solution, poll finds

A majority of both Palestinians and Israelis are willing to accept a two-state solution, according to a poll from the international grassroots movement One Voice.

Based on public opinion research methods used in Northern Ireland, 500 interviews were completed in Israel and 600 in the West Bank and Gaza immediately following the Gaza war and the Israeli elections.

Each side was asked which problems they thought were "very significant" and what the solutions might be.

The results indicate that 74% of Palestinians and 78% of Israelis are willing to accept a two-state solution on an option range from "tolerable" to "essential", while 59% of Palestinians and 66% of Israelis find a single bi-national state "unacceptable".

The poll comes as it emerged Barack Obama is to invite Israeli, Palestinian and Egyptian leaders to the White House within the next two months in a fresh push for Middle East peace. Obama, speaking at the White House yesterday, said there was a need to try to rise above the cynicism about prospects for peace.

The results of today's poll imply that mainstream Israeli and Palestinian populations have yet to acknowledge the significant priorities and fears on the other side.

The top item for Palestinians is the establishment of an independent sovereign state at 97%, followed by the rights of refugees at 95% and agreement on the future of Jerusalem at 94%.

For Israelis the top item is security at 77%, followed by an agreement on the future of Jerusalem at 68% and rights to natural resources at 62%.

An analysis of the poll by One Voice says: "It is absolutely essential that the issues at the top of these two lists get dealt with in any peace agreement or it is unlikely that that agreement will last. This means Palestinians need to be aware of and address the 'Security of Israel' problem that comes in 12th on the Palestinian list, and that Israelis need to be aware of and address the cluster of issues at the top of the Palestinian list."

The poll also revealed significant divisions about the issues of settlements and refugees, on which there was no single proposed solution which met with majority approval on both sides. Ninety-eight per cent of Palestinians think that all the settlers should leave the occupied territories with the settlements abolished – an option that 53% of Israelis find unacceptable.

More than 90% of Palestinians want refugees to be given the right to return with compensation, while 77% of Israelis say that is unacceptable.

On Jerusalem, the sides are poles apart. The most attractive option for Palestinians – 95% – is for all of Jerusalem to remain in Palestine, and for Israelis it is for all of Jerusalem to remain in Israel at 56%.

The report says that "as these two options are mutually exclusive proposals to internationalise or divide the city also need to be considered".

One Voice concludes that, at a minimum, the results suggest that "the continued insistence of both sides on a negotiated and mutually acceptable resolution could offer significant legitimacy to political leaders looking to push for negotiations toward a two-state agreement".

Good post . Its basicaly what i had been thinking , but that the real problem is the israeli government as all the problems had had sugestions for solutions that both sides had acepted...... at least on paper and in public . The only one that hasnt been agreed on is the return of the Palastinian refugees , because of the fact that together with the Palistinian people in Palastine they would at least equal the israeli population in size........ and totaly flood the area with kids as the Palastinians breed at several times the rate the israelis do .

Israel only acts like they do because they know that the United States is backing them up.

As far as I am concerned, the Israelis do not have ANY claim on that region, they derived their 'claim' from a book of fairy tales and myths, and they only really care about keeping things exactly like they are right now.....which is what modern 'conservatism' is about......

Also, it is a perfect example of why governments should N-E-V-E-R base their policies on religion.

I'm not a fan of Israel, even remotely, mainly because of their close ties with neo-cons and organized religion, the two natural enemies of thinking people everywhere.
