Does being an adult mean you have to strive to survive?

If everyone was supplied with the bare essentials of survival for no other reason than being a citizen of the country that provides them would their be much for them to complain about?

To elaborate, if every man woman and child born within the borders of a country thereby legal citizens and provided Free minimum sustenance in the form of air, water, power, shelter, health care and means for modern communication and conveyance when necessary. Would this cut down on crime in general?

i think it certainly would
generally speaking people commit crime because they lack something and are trying to get it (usually money or what money can buy)
it wouldnt eliminate crime because there will always be people who want more or have a naturally violent nature but it would stop the need for alot of crime

In affluent societies with some socialist charachteristics (e.g. welfare systems for the unemployed) I seriously doubt it. Few people where I live commit crime by stealing air, water, power, shelter, health care and few of the assaults and murders are committed because of these things.

What you are talking about here is essentially a socialist state and history has shown us that socialist ideals, whilst great, are generally ruined by the greed and corruption of those that are doling out the minimum sustenance. Taxes would also be likely to be very high too because all these things have to be paid for somehow.

Yes corruption would need to be dealt with sternly. I don't know I was just curious. Something is missing from all systems. I wouldn't mind paying higher taxes if it meant less poverty and not having to worry about getting robbed at night so often.

Not in the long run.

Everywhere centrally planned economies have been attempted, they resulted in the desperate poverty and the starvation and mass slaughter of millions of human beings.

The reason for this is that centrally planned economies cannot solve the Economic Calculation Problem. Even really Big Computers can't solve it because the calculations are subjective, not objective.

In the long run, centrally planned economies increase the frequency of crimes like exploitation, theft, rape, and murder.

So localities would have to evolve for needs?
