A Salvia divinorum horror story

The San Fransisco Chronicle published the following sad story (written by Dr. Eugene Schoenfeld, who's familiar with psychedelics and published about them throughout the '60s and '70s) about an idiot putting Salvia divinorum leaves and extracts through his girlfriend's joints.

An 18-year-old woman was admitted to a psychiatric hospital, after reportedly smoking marijuana, with schizophrenia-type symptoms. She was agitated, disorganized and hallucinating. Several days later, her former boyfriend revealed that she had unknowingly smoked leaves and leaf extracts of Salvia divinorum added to her marijuana joint. The young woman had a long history of cannabis use with no untoward effects, but had never before used salvia. After increasing self-mutilating behavior in the hospital, she was involuntarily admitted to a closed ward. Despite large doses of intravenously and intramuscularly administered anti-psychotic drugs, she remained highly psychotic, with disordered thinking, delusions, and slow speech. A few nights later, she was transferred to an intensive care unit because of "a marked decrease of alertness." She had developed a toxic psychosis with stupor and catatonic excitement. Because the anti-psychotic medications (Zyprexa and Haldol) were having no useful effect, the young woman was given two series of electroconvulsive treatments, but these were discontinued because she had recurrent episodes in which her heart stopped for periods as long as 5 seconds. Her erratic heartbeat required a temporary external cardiac pacemaker.

Then things started to turn bad .... Her agitation caused her to bite off a 1/2-inch-by- 1/2-inch part of her tongue, which she aspirated, requiring tracheal intubation and ventilation. She developed elevated temperature, a drop in blood pressure and a rigid abdomen. An X-ray showed signs of peritonitis. An exploration of her abdomen disclosed several necrotic (dead, dying) areas of her small intestine and colon, requiring surgical removal of the affected parts. After a long hospitalization, which included decreasing doses of anti-psychotic drugs, her psychotic symptoms resolved and she was discharged in a psychiatrically stable condition. The young woman and her parents have since instituted legal proceedings against her former boyfriend, accusing him of dosing her with Salvia divinorum.

Wow man, now i am curious if Salvia really is the reason of this nasty story.

A friend of mine claims that his schizophrenia started after smoking a Salvia joint when he was in the USA several years ago. I was disinclined to believe him, but this story seems to confirm that Salvia may indeed trigger states of schizophrenia beyond the duration of the trip itself.

Shit thats fucking nasty!

The bloke that spiked her should be locked away for life :x

I have only ever smoked the leaves, the taste was so disgusting I stopped smoking ciggaretes soon after lol

Nasty thing from what I can tell, People who take it often report Terror or Extreme Fear. I'll give it a miss 8)

"An exploration of her abdomen disclosed several necrotic (dead, dying) areas of her small intestine and colon, requiring surgical removal of the affected parts."

Doesn't that suggest something else is at work as well as the salvia? I'm not defending what the guy did - dosing people is about the dumbest and nastiest thing you can do. I just didn't think it was possible to have necrosis from neurological disorders - salvia isn't cytotoxic is it?!

Any thoughts on that?

Well sadly, we will never know if there were any medical conditions she was in to begin with before ingesting the Salvia. And screw locking him up, we need to just beat him with bags of oranges.

This is very interesting, was she on any type of Anti Suppresents or anything I wonder?
On a less serious note, my money goes to CA as the next state to ban Salvia.

Yeah, seriously. It's not inactive, just very, very ineffective. I've smoked pure salvia joints (as have friends of mine) and it was at most the mildest buzz. This story sounds pretty darn strange. Not to mention that salvia burns, tastes, feels very different from mj. i suspect that something is missing from the story here

of course either way what the guy did was wrong

Yeah, there's something fishy about this story.

It's recommended that you do not smoke Salvia if you have any sort (or history) of mental disorder.

I have indeed smoked Salvia and cannabis in the same bowl. The only effect I noticed was that my skin felt like it was very hot (As if I had a sun burn, or was under the sun for hours.) It lingered for about 3 hours. It was, however a very interesting experience. I didn't have enough of an extract to have any pure visuals (open eye or closed) but it was quite interesting.

Recommended as always-- do not mix herbs or drugs. You may be safe with Salvia and cannabis, but I don't recommended it.

Oranges? I'd say nails.

Something isn't turning round with this history (sorry if that makes no sense, I directly translated a french expression  ).

The salvia didn't help for sure, but I'm sure there was something else.

Can't believe I didn't see that it was only a partial post, this is the next paragraph,
"Few users of Salvia divinorum will ever undergo the horrors described above. But psychedelic drugs are especially dangerous for individuals who are psychologically unstable or not yet fully matured emotionally, for example, teenagers. These dangers are multiplied many times when a person is "dosed" and doesn't realize that the resultant strange perceptual effects are drug induced. The "dosed" victim may then experience a prolonged psychotic reaction, especially if predisposed to mental illness."

Which points that there very well may have been some sort of underlying medical problem.

this can't only be a salvia spike, it would NEVER last that long smoked, esp joint style.. that sounds more like a dissociative, a la pcp or ketamine, and the necrosis i dont believe is a result of this. this, i think, was found as a result of having to go to the hospital, and must have been caused by some other underlying issue.

nevertheless, that is really fucked up. somebody should dose HIM, with something like a sheet of acid, kidnap him, and then drop him off in a slaughterhouse for the rest of his trip.
fuck people like that i would stab him if that girl were my friend[/i]

responses like this aren't helpful and don't help psychonauts' images

DoseNation discusses the article today: http://www.dosenation.com/listing.php?id=5335
Erowid contributing editor Lux pointed out, "One thing that is not made particularly clear in this article is that the described necrosis of the small intestine and colon resulted not from the Salvia, but rather from the regimen of antipsychotic meds the poor woman was administered." I suspect the author of the article, Dr. Eugene Schoenfeld, who "practices psychiatry and addiction medicine in Sausalito," overlooked making this point overtly because it seemed obvious to him; I'm giving him credit since his bio indicates, "During the 1960s and 1970s, he provided information about psychoactive drugs through his Dr. Hip Pocrates newspaper columns and radio programs."

The response is not helpfull to most but a true show of distate for scum like the idiot in the article. Plus the article itself gives "drug" users, "Psychonauts" alike a bad image. We wouldnt be here discussing it now, if not for the idiot spiking his girlfriend.

I was inclined to say something horrific like adrian too but Im learning to express myself in a milder manner

P.S. I wouldnt waste good acid on such an idiot.

I suspected there was previous mental illness, thanks for clearin that up CM.

What you mean mate?

CM was talking about the antipsychotic medication causing necrosis in her small intestine.

CM was talking about the antipsychotic medication causing necrosis in her small intestine.
Well I can only assume that she was taking the antispychotic meds because she has some form of disease that cause her to be prescribed these pills. i.e. You give a schizophrenic medication to help control.

Maybe I read the post wrong, but I just assumed that sense she was taking medicine for a mental disease that she had one. ;)
