why the diamonds are valuable?

diamonds = brillant, hard, and you can not find it everywhere,...so, that's "why it is a valuable material in the world"?

and for example,
a simple stone on the road, street etc....why it is NOT valuable ?

its the way they are crafted and also how they are gathered that makes them so valuable

plus, the valuable things are rare things. a common thing cannot be valuable because everyone would have one and then, everybody would be rich. that's the foundations of economy

Even crappy diamonds are worth quite a bit because they are used in all manner of ways because of their durability. When you get your teeth drilled at the dentist, that's a diamond crusted drill. Even some giant pieces of machinery, like those used to dig up roads and asphalt are diamond coated.

You can only scratch a diamond with another diamond. That's pretty cool in my book.

In the specific example of diamond, the real reason is the global monopoly by the Beers company. Diamond are not that rare at all.

I think burning up a diamond in liquid oxygen is way more fun than just the small stone on your desk. Can't find the link just now, maybe later.

Diamonds and other preciouse stones and metals are valuable because they are coated in the blood of baby kittens 8)

On a more serious note, they are precious and expensive because they are something very hard to get. Do i have some? No and that's the whole point. Give your girlfriend a ring with a plane old rock and she'll kill you with it, give here a diamond ring and well she might kill you anyway but that's beside the point. 8)
