what is art for you can u explain it with 3 words?
for me
art is:

persistence
ambition
life..

fucked

.. and totally and utterly subjective

Subjective (thx Siq ;X)
Adventurous
Meaningfull

Money.

It's all about the money.

A thing of beauty is a joy forever it will never turn into nothingness

Or some shit, where did i get that from?
Anyone recognise?

-John Keats- ;)

A thing of beauty is a joy for ever:
Its loveliness increases; it will never
Pass into nothingness; but still will keep
A bower quiet for us, and a sleep
Full of sweet dreams, and health, and quiet breathing.
Therefore, on every morrow, are we wreathing
A flowery band to bind us to the earth,
Spite of despondence, of the inhuman dearth
Of noble natures, of the gloomy days,
Of all the unhealthy and o'er-darken'd ways
Made for our searching: yes, in spite of all,
Some shape of beauty moves away the pall
From our dark spirits...

He's clearly talking about ambient

Art is subjective to anyone, but what does it mean to you?

For me it can be:
Inspiration
Awe-inspiring
Enjoyment

creation
self awareness
escape

really difficult to put it 3 words... it's also cure, unity, communication, awareness, sensitivity, frustration, freedom, and everything everyone else said, including the money. but real art is not about the money, it's about the souls.

There are multiple forms of art of which most can't communicate with me.

Poetry .. doesn't touch me at all, I just feel I'm reading incorrect sentences, I can only appreciate information when it's meaning is not dependant on interpertation. "I just want to be clear".

Visual art .. only one specific genre; psychedelic/surrealisme. Modern art seem like making money by lack of skill and just acting vague; abuse of the 'title' of art.

Audial art/music .. sure, you could call it art. You can also call it a job, when your goal is to earn money with it. I make music, and sometimes I may dare to call a track art, but that only because it's non-conformative, new, innovative. I'd still prefere to call it just a nice track.

I do think that the 'title' of "art" is abused way to much, espescially in modernism, so thereby I agree with Brew for most art.

Not using the word or concept "art" .. I'd say there are some audio and visual objects that attract my attetion :)

I'm gonna be the lame one about it.

Gödel
Escher
Einstein

Something new...
and beautiful
that makes you think

...so yes, very subjective

That's new, and beautiful, and it made me think, so yes, that's art!

For a lot of poetry that's true, but there's poetry that really makes me think, and while I think about it I realize how beautiful it is, try this:

Life.
Water, Food, Sex.
Water, Food, Sex, Cocaine.
Water, Food, Cocaine, Sex.
Water, Cocaine, Food, Sex.
Cocaine, Water, Food, Sex.
Cocaine, Water, Food.
Cocaine, Water.
Cocaine.
Death.

EVOLUTION OF A COCAINE ADDICT

by James Joyner

P.S.: Cudos to nirvanana who introduced me to this poem. It's great!

art is poverty
poverty is art.

Siq, I was being a little sarcastic. Art is my life. Although, I completely understand what you mean by people abusing the term art. However, I do enjoy abstract expressionism which is probably what you were referring to in people being vague and displaying a lack of talent. I enjoy paintings (viewing and making) that are not always about the finished product but more about the process. I don't want to look at smooth, perfectly rendered pretty pictures; I like to see things that convey emotion and energy through brush strokes, movement and color. I'd rather look at pictures of something that's completely made up, that only exists within this one painting; as opposed to still lifes or "trippy mushroom art".

Art is expression of ones feelings in an artistic way, it's communication, really, and treatment for pain or just sharing happiness. It's recording the world, and showing it through our own view of it. I get the feeling that nothing we create is really original, it's just there waiting for us to view it and share it in a new way.

IMHO everything is art, just the degree varies.
If you want it's a property (degree of artness) everything/every subject has attached.
Of course that's not a fixed value, it it's different for every person, subject and time.
E.g: The way I dress / show up in public IS art.
(Very bad art anyway *g* but the important thing is it IS art)
The way my room is arranged, the magic of the old tree I see when looking out the window; in short, again, everything is art.
That's neither a definition of art nor does it say what art means to me.
It's just an observation.

art is a reflection of something, could be society, or psychological motives, or happiness. 3 words are too few to describe art
