Tony & the Slave-free Chocolate Factory

Chocolate is something you eat for pleasure, until you discover the appalling things that happen on cocoa plantations. In the production of cocoa beans even children are being exploited. Slavery still exists.

Dutch journalist and documentarian Tony van de Keuken met with former child slaves from Burkina Faso who worked without wages and under atrocious conditions on cocoa plantations in the Ivory Coast.

"Knowing this," Van de Keuken said, "Eating chocolate makes me a criminal."

From art. 416 of the Dutch Penal Code:
Whoever receives goods...while knowing at the time he receives them or when they are made available to him...that it concerns unlawfully obtained goods is guilty of wilfully receiving...unlawfully obtained goods and shall be punished by a term in prison of maximum four years or a Category Five fine.

And he ate another chocolate bar...

Criminals belong behind bars. So Tony van de Keuken turned himself in. In the meantime, he decided to produce his own chocolate bar.

Since i hearded this i'm not even thinking about eating nestle shit any more. The consumer has all the power in the world. People own everything, we just dont see it like that. If we stop paying these companies we push them to a kind of thinking where they HAVE to take into account all there employes.

' The consumer has all the power in the world '

An accurate statement, but not a realistic expectation, to pressure huge multinational corporations by consumer advocacy just won't really work anymore, simply because of the numbers that exist in this era....

For example, if everyone on this board, and all their immediate friends and family boycotted all Nestle' products starting tomorrow, it wouldn't even make a dent in one percent of their profit sheet.
Which means ; We would have no power via this route.
Since the economy has become globalized, the underpinnings of it have become MUCH more resistant to any one interest group having
a coercive influence on policy, because of the broader base of consumers.

Enter the plight of the 'radical', that certain individual who takes it upon himself to try new ways of fighting these demons, ways which may be 'socially acceptable' and may not be.....

There are 'radicals' everywhere, even here in America, some of them are at Universities, professors who make it their duty to influence students mindsets in liberal ways, simply by force of osmosis and repetition, the forces that advertising uses to cause much of the damage in the first place. :P

Some radicals have 'gone over' to the dark side of the force, making bombs, killing people, and destroying symbols..... these are called 'terrorists'.

Other radicals, finding themselves somewhat in the middle, roam the web, searching for fertile ground to sow seed.

Some of these radicals have developed specialized techniques for sowing their particular brand of radicalism......including, but not limited to;

Frightening people
Pissing people off
Creating Controversy
Challenging Tradition

... as well as reasonable, rational explanations, when such things are called for.

So, seen through these lenses, one must conclude that people need to WAKE UP, and be shaken from their complaceny, unjacked, whatever you'd call it, but there is a real sense of urgency. Time IS running out.

THEN, and ONLY then, can any kind of collective influence be exerted as you suggest.

Commentary, please.

Fact is that tony's chocolate is not only tastier, but it also soothes your consciousness. Another fact is that alot of people (including me) are lazy and will buy chocolate when they feel like it, not neccesarily when there is also tony's chocolonely available. However I do think that this is a good system to raise awareness and to also influence the public opinion and people who do have the power to change things.

Commentary, please.

well live gets harder once you've been plugged loose from the matrix...
but it's more rewarding looking with open eyes.
real eyes realize real lies...

for truth you must give up things, sure consuming and materialism is easy...
and a tv-watching idiot fits more in with society than a critic...

btw, i enjoy your style of writing spice, keep up the good work

spice has touched that spot on my brain that i always ignore. i hate to answer this kinds of thread, not because i despise fighting against the instaured fascism and easiness of getting what one wants, when one wants.
in my teens, i fought a lot. i was against this globalization, this overwhelming shit that sucks and sucks and sucks you off until you have no mind of your own. perhaps, if i had the same lifes that some of you that still fight for it, i would join you. i grew in the most remote city that you can imagine, in the middle of a desert, in where having a colour TV in 1995 was a standard luxury. i was fighting alone, and the people that started backing me up, were in demonstrations to smoke some joints, to fuck some girls and to throw stones and sticks to police officers, who (apart from being asses) don't have any fault in this. i am afraid that that part of me has died, and i don't fight anymore for nothing. the only thing i still fight for is the liberalization of drugs and the extermination of TV.
nevertheless, i apreciate your writing.

Damn, I love chocolate milk! :(

there is also fairtrade stuff, at least here in austria. it's some kind of mark that guarantees that nobody has been exploited. it seems legit to me :>
a life without chocolate is possible, but senseless :D

I also boycot nestle and so on. I try to make people aware of that.. some agree, some don't care..

offtopic: i love your avatar, misery. marx had a real psychonaut theory: the invention of property destroyed humanity. (i don't follow any political idea of it...)

misery a dit:
fairtrade stuff

I know someone who worked for one of those organization and he told me that this fairtrademark is, at least in this organization's case, a load of crap.

I already feared that.
but I don't think that it applies to every fairtrade thingy.. we have this chocolatier here in austria, and I visited his little factory, and he also met the farmer who is growing the cocoa for his chocolate. of course it could be bollocks too. :(
but man that visit there was incredible. everybody was free to eat as much chocolate as you want, and we took full advantage of that  weirdest sorts ever.. mountaincheese + walnuts, shiitake, pumpkin seeds etc.... hmmm, it was like charly and the chocolate factory :D. sry for offtopic ;)
I don't know what I should think about all that trading stuff. there's always some idiot (or, sucker of satans cock) who takes such things ("eco-park", "fairtrade") and uses it only for his purpose, changing nothing but the name. it's hard to know who you can trust and who not. but I think, if it comes to nestle and similar, it's often quite obvious.. ok, it took me some time to figure out that the coffe dispenser in our school is by nestle -.-

yay for revolution! :>

It's actually pretty easy to know who to trust, if they have a profit sheet in their hand, and hide behind press releases, then they're shit, in
my book.

Generally, non-transparency = EVIL.

Check those fucking republicans out, man, every thing they do is secretive, obfuscated behind press releases and lawyers.

Usually here in the US, they're afraid to voice their views in the open air because many of them instinctively sense that they shouldn't, and they're right.

Ms. spice has told me many times that all I would have to do is to bite my tongue and I could make out easily down here. Problem is, I DONT CARE TO.

I will, and have, verbally disemboweled some of these fucking idiots that tried to explain to me ( while looking down their nose at me ) why the trickle-down theory of republican economics is best for America.

I'd rather give every minority and bum a thousand dollar bill a day for a year than for these neo-cons to have a single gram more influence and power than they already have.

And I 've said that to a lot of white men down here. Since I am white, too....generally they think I am crazy as hell once I start speaking my mind. Imagine how well it must go over down here in Dixie.

I only eat fairtrade...but sometimes i get the suspect they just put that lable on to make it more expensive....

mmmmm choooooooooclate.....

yeah i saw a documentary on the fairtrade brand/mark, and its double the price, but the farmers only get 8 extra cents a kilo more.

I think its good that you bring this subject up . But i think that we should all be more honest about it . We all profit from it and , at the moment , non of us has a white vest . We cant get away from it . A very large part of all the products that we all use and the worlds economy are based on slavery , exploitation and child labour .

In our own countrys children deliver news papers , help their familys in shops or on farms and do house work because their parents havent got time because they have to work to keep their heads above water and give their familys a decent standard of living . I know that that is not the same as the forced labour and slavery that lots of children in the world are subjected to . But they mostly have to do it to keep themselves alive , for them and their familys to survive , our children do it to have more . To buy fashion clothes , makeup , tatoos , walkmen , ipods and other camoflage ego dildos , as a substitute for being mentaly and spiritualy castrated and having no charakter .

"How many roads must a man walk down
Before you call him a man?
Yes, 'n' how many seas must a white dove sail
Before she sleeps in the sand?
Yes, 'n' how many times must the cannon balls fly
Before they're forever banned?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind,
The answer is blowin' in the wind.

How many times must a man look up
Before he can see the sky?
Yes, 'n' how many ears must one man have
Before he can hear people cry?
Yes, 'n' how many deaths will it take till he knows
That too many people have died?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind,
The answer is blowin' in the wind.

How many years can a mountain exist
Before it's washed to the sea?
Yes, 'n' how many years can some people exist
Before they're allowed to be free?
Yes, 'n' how many times can a man turn his head,
Pretending he just doesn't see?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind,
The answer is blowin' in the wind.".
