For cakes you need substrate, like brown rice flour or rye mixed with vermiculite. You innoculate the substrate. Days later you will see white mycelium growth. Once the mycelium is at 100% you put them in a terrarium and watch them grow.

pure Rye or BRF mixed with vermiculite

at what point do you add the spores? before or after the mycelium is at 100%? and what is mycelium anyway?

meneercactus, i like your new avatar. and what is brf?? would i make the substrate with equal measurements like the cakes?? For example 2/3 cup of rye, 1/3 cup of vermiculite and 1/3 cup of water??

ACE: after you innoculate your jars, the mycellium will start to grow. This is what the mushrooms grow out of. If there is no mycellium, there will be no mushrooms.

OK! I think I got it now..
1) Make a cake (the substrate)
2) Innoculate the cake and wait for mycellium to grow.
3) when mycellium is @ 100% then add spores.
4) Put cake in a container, spray with water, and watch the mushrooms grow.

That wasn't too hard to understasnd..

OK 1 last question.. What is an Innoculation?

Innoculate means to add the spores..so after you innoculate (add spores) the mycellium will grow. When that's at 100%, then you put it in your container, or bucket, or aquarium or whatever.

How much water to how much rye?? Is it better to add vermiculite, to that, or just use the rye and water?? If addin' vermiculite is better, how much would i add of that??

Is it ok if i just use vermiculite for the casing..or should i definitely mix it with peat moss??

Is this stuff a must..or is it just highly recommended?? If i just use vermiculite, will it still work.

This is the tek which seems to be recomended for beginners.
I am trying this tek at the moment with a syringe I got from Azarius. I have got 5 jars currently incubating using this technique and things seem to be coming along ok. I inoculated on last saturday 8th. So they have been incubating for less than a week but they have got signs of mycelium growth already.
I did some different substrates aswell just to see if there was a difference but it seems to be too soon to really tell at the moment. The other substrates i used were just brown rice and another couple with just popcorn. They are coming along fine too.
I am just really paranoid that I am going to get a contamination in some of my jars.

I found the tek there pretty simple to do, its easy to adapt to suit you own needs and is not set in stone. The most important thing seems to simply be sterility.
I would definatley recomend trying it, so far things have worked out cheaper than buying a growbox, and hopefully I will become self-sufficient in the future giving me a never ending supply of shrooms

it does work!

this is rye flower with verm.
soon ready. I used the spores that came from the growbox. I have about 5 or 6 of em.

How do you keep the spores from your flushes?? I'm going to harvest my crop on Sunday and I want to make a print. I'm not sure the process to take to make a print...

Thanks

Printing:

m420's Printmaking Tek
This is the best tek for me. I've gotten 0 contams so far - make a sterile print on paper with foil surrounding it and covering the actual spores. To make the print you need to a container that’s airtight and oven safe. You then heat the oven to 400° and bake the container with all the print papers inside to sterilize them. Then let it all cool down completely. Heat up oven to 190° and keep a constant flow coming out of the oven to keep out contams. Clean hands with rubbing alcohol. Now put a fresh cap with as much as stem as can be cut off on top of the paper by opening the foil "lid" and placing on top.. Repeat till finished. Now put lid over container and shut off oven and wait till the spores drop. To take out the prints heat oven to 190° again and clean hands with rubbing alcohol and lift the lid off and close the foil "lid" and take out the prints then simply put the foil back over and you are done. I store my prints in ziplock bags.

Shroomery printing Tek
Take a clean material you want to print on (fresh typing paper, index cards, wax paper, tin foil, glass slides....), cut a mature cap off the stem as near to the gills as possible with a clean scalpel or knife and place the cap on the printing material gills down. Cover the cap with a jar. Let sit for about 12 hours. Pick up the cap, fold the print an tape the edges or leave it as is and put into a plastic baggie. Label and store in a dark, cold and dry place.

Oven Dish Tek
A simple and easy way to make 1 or more prints depending on the size of the oven dish. I use a glass one with a glass lid. I cut a rectangle(s) of alu foil and fold it in the middle and open/flatten it again. Put the rectangle(s) in the dish, put a double layer of thin foil on the dish and close it well with the lid. The closed dish is placed in an oven and baked for 20 minutes at 220 Celsius. Let the dish cool in a clean area. Cut a mature cap off the stem as near to the gills as possible with a clean scalpel or knife and place the cap on the printing material gills down. Cover the cap with the foil and lid. Let it sit for about 12 hours. Pick up the cap, and close the dish for an other 12 hrs. Fold the print on the pre-folded line and flip over the edges so the print is protected on all sides against contaminations, put it into a plastic baggie. Label and store in a dark, cold and dry place.

heheh
You are full of tons of usefull information!

Thanks.. I'll give it a try this weekend.. I think I might invest in a microscpoe to see the spores...

You guys are great! Thanks again
