I recently over the interwebs ran into a couple ounces of salvia leaves, for the express purpose of trying the quid method! I've read experiences from about a year ago on the site, just wondering if anyone has any experiences they would care to share about the quid method?

Sounds like chewing about 15-20 leaves induces some kind of effect, connection, etc. or is it best to split that amount up over a half hour or so? This really intrigues me because I'm far more interested in the experience the Mazatecs have than the immediate and visual but sort of random spiraling experience induced by smoking (and I prefer to smoke as infrequently as possible anyway).

You have to chew it for a really long time, it tastes disgusting and the trip is very mild. But other than that it's pretty interesting to do.

cool.. most trip reports are about smoking.. so it is intresting to read about the traditional way of doing it. i think the mazatecs ingest somethig along the order of 50-80 leaves but they chew them and swallow them.. (which actually isnt too expensive if you buy leaves in bulk, but i would definitely want a sitter about if i were to even think about injesting that quantity of leaves,!)

i recall reading in the hofmann book his wife tried the method on one of their trips to mexico (he was sick that day and couldn't join her) and they described it as similar to mushrooms but somewhat milder.

the mazatecs prefer to do the ritual without any light and meditate however, which always enhances the effect of any psychedelic I've tried. anyway it will be interesting to experience.

I have done this just a few weeks ago. I have had a Salvia plant in my room for like 10 months now, and decided to finally try to chew some of the leaves. Me and my girlfriend took about 8 leaves each, rolled together, and chewed for about 10-15 minutes. In between chewing, we kept the leaves under our tongue. Oh, and before that, we brushed our teeth, as menthol-like stuff enhances the taking up of substances in your mouth. Mouthwater should work even better. And, no swallowing! Salvoinorin does get taken up in your stomach. The taste was not really disgusting, just very bitter, that's all. I did not expect much from it, also because we took quite a low dose.

About 30 minutes after first starting to chew the leaves, I started noticing surprisingly strong effects. It reminded me much of mushrooms, with the short-term memory loss, chaotic thoughts, slightly distorted feeling of time, and a moderate distortiong of space around me. Everytime I looked at something in my room, it felt like I 'zoomed in' on it. At the same time, there was no emotional change; my mood stayed the same and I felt nothing special emotionally. After about 20 minutes, these effects wore off, and some time later, everything was back to normal.

My girlfriend did not notice any perceptional changes, but had a very strong experience of re-living past feelings, very negative, and really sort of a bad trip. For hir, the experience also did not take longer than 25 minutes.

I found my first experience with Salvia really interesting, and I will sure take some more leaves next time :) But I will stay cautious with this plant, as I think it can give you very unexpected experiences.

So far I've yet to have any real "breakthrough" experiences in terms of personal insights, etc with this plant. My experiences with it have been sort of random and dreamlike, never directly connected to anything around me.. which is still interesting. I've done the quid twice and am only now starting to feel like I'm "connecting" with it, learning how to listen (after smoking too).

I've only had one "sort of bad" trip, when i smoked 20x. I saw a spiral, turn into the inside of this fuselage (like an airliner), a long cabin, but the seating was reddish, victorian, ornate. It began to rotate towards me, and i heard a chanting voice, "It's burning! It's burning!" as it passed through my body I felt flames searing up my back, the sensation gaining in intensity. At this point I realized I was tripping so the feelings didn't get too freaky, and I just kept my eyes closed because I wanted to ride out the experience.. which lasted maybe 30 more seconds. I could see though that if I had taken a stronger dose, been lost in that state for even another minute it could have been a profoundly bad experience.

A fascinating plant... think I'll try the quid method again soon. Interesting you are trying the fresh leaves, I think they must be much more potent than the dried, I need at least 20 leaves to get even a sort of moderate experience happening, and both times I've done it now the experience has been quite different.

I did not take fresh leaves! I took dried ones, gathered from my plant in the past months. I soaked these in water for a few minutes, and then chewed.

Ah, maybe I am a hardhead then :D

I have not had great results with quidding. I know people who really like it, though.

I have had great results with tincture. I wrote about this in the tincture topic.

With quidding or tincture, things happen slower than with smoking.

This gives you more time to learn.

Good trips and bad trips aren't random occurrences. There are reasons why they happen. The trip is an interactive experience. You can learn how not to have bad trips.

I could write 20 pages on this subject. Maybe another time.
