Hi all,

I have bought a 600W lamp to start growing some plants for own use. I'm tempted to use a closet for it with the dimensions: 75cm x 60cm x 200cm (height). Wouldnt too much heat be a problem in this closet? I have a big fan and filtering system with a temperature controlled switch so I think I will be able to keep it in optimal temperature but am not sure.

Anyone ?

Cheers

Change of plans....this cabinet seems much to small. Instead, I decided to use two so I double the space:

What do you guys think, heat shouldnt be too much of a problem right?

hmm well basicly everything is possible as long as you have enough ventillation.
2m height = 60cm for the lamp, 10-20cm for the pots and soil, leaves 1.20 for the planets.. should be enough.
are you going to do soil or hydro?

Thanks Bomski..

Going soil, never did hydro before so maybe next time.

I did some more modelling and it looks like the space is enough for what I want. Gonna go this way for now :)

Why not try a scrog (screen of green) and save height + optimize space and light height ?

its better to adjust the height of the lamp than the height of the plants.. looking at the 2nd pic makes me wonder what your plan is ;)
scrog is something a bit more advanced, but could turn out pretty well

Sorry, i meant Ssscrog : super simple screen of green

I am sure people from (ex)overgrow remember the effectivness of BigFatj´s Ssscrog method ;

By the way.. hi Max21!

I didnt model ropes to lift and lower the lamp yet :)

Scrog sounds new to me, will look for that technique.

Still, anyone have experience with heat production in a space like that?

Edit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scrog

interesting...

Dude,
Just knock out a wall on the parking lot side.
Put in a clear glass seperator.
Hook up a tent to where the wall used to be but now your new grow lights BEAM.
Put up a sign that says: "Toke-n-Tan"!

Done!

:))))))

What are friends for bro?!

Ya know, ....
Even just to sit around, twist-up a phat one, kick back and just further brain-storm this concept (grow-room sollarium franchise) I'd travel the 3,000+kilometers!!

Allright, so scrogging is basically training your plants so the buds are in the most light efficient place right?

Sounds really interesting and the way to go :)

Brilliant bro:

Perhaps this is just further mirrored-logic evidence of the genuineness of our "Toke-n-Tan" concept: in the same way that you can "scrog" the plants we can twist and pack in to the tanning portion perhaps as much as 3x more tanning clients if we bill it also as some kind of Rasta-Yoga studio. Just cram them all up against the glass wall of the growing room,...like a new kind of tanning yoga called "SolariaScroga"!!!

Now I know why I shouldnt have smoked that fucking joint ;)

Finished the cabinet with ventilation system and all.Temps stay perfect with 600W HPS so that should be no prob. Getting a 400W MH light this afternoon for growing purposes. Right now I have 3 Santa Maria cuttings. One of them I want to use for experimenting (crossing), the other two are purely for harvest (free smoking is my main intention with this setup).

What I would love to know beforehand, is how much power (moneywise) these lamps use. Does anyone have reference to an online overview?

Cheers

its not so hard to calculate..
if u have both a 600W and 400W, they will take 1KW/hour = 1kwh
during the growth that is 18kwh/day, during the flowerig its 12kwh/day.
1 kwh is usually around 7-9cents (nuon) soo:
18*9=1,62e/day
12*9 = 1.08e/day

I'm wondering if the scrog method is more effective than to bend down the plants when they're about to flower (so that a large part of the stem is in a horizontal position below the lamp). Works pretty well from my experience - the flowers on all of the horizontal stem parts are in the best light and grow like crazy, not just the top flowers. You also get a pretty much flat area below the lamp with maximum light efficiency.

Hi Tryp,

That sounds like another method I read about, LST (Low Stress training). I will post the link later. This is basically what you say, you drill holes in the edge of the pots and using rope/ironwire or whatever, you gently train the plants in such a way, that the buds are all in the best position for the light. THe TEK I found was very detailed, will post later.
