The Tory government of Stephen Harper has been trying to move in the opposite direction by increasing penalties, but it is out of touch with public opinion, which largely regards smoking weed as a victimless crime. It is time, Mr. Harper, to get with the program.

You can get more time in prison from growing 201 pot plants that you can for raping an infant.
You can get more time in prison for importing a certain amount of pot, than you can for MURDER.
If you get caught with pot within a certain distance of a school, you can add 2 years to your sentence.
You can get 6 months in jail for growing 6 plants.

This is Canada's Disgrace!!!! That harper government win means that they can just push this through without proper consultation of Canadian citizens or proper concepts of the human and financial cost. This bullshit government wants to spend over a billion dollars on upgrades to prisons and on new prisons when the crime rate is going DOWN. The government's criminal intentions are to lock up pot smokers, to lock up the innocents, to make money from selling the prison system to private hands and to pass of the mess that Health Canada has created to harper's cronies. Even someone with a license to smoke it medicinally will be denied the ability to grow their own. This is the kind of 'Head-Up-Their-Ass' thinking that the government is now engaging in. This is not just disgusting, it's reprehensible and contravenes even further, the robbery of Canadian Citizen's civil and human rights.
