Athens - A military plane carrying special police forces arrived on the southern Mediterranean island of Crete on Tuesday to join the hunt for gunmen who shot three officers during a drug crackdown in a remote village.
Gunmen armed with automatic rifles on Monday opened fire on a convey of 12 jeeps which were carrying some 40 officers, as they were heading to the mountain village of Zoniana Milo Potamou.
The officers, accompanied by a public prosecutor, were planning to search the home of a local drugs lord.
Three police officers were taken to hospital with gunshot wounds. One of the officers was reported to be in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the neck.
The team of 75 special forces were expected to try to bring order to the mutinous village on Tuesday which was known to be a major cannabis growing area and to search homes for weapons.
The majority of Cretans own their own guns and although gun ownership is illegal in Greece the government turns a blind eye, accepting it as a part of traditional Cretan culture.
In the past, villagers involved in drug cultivation near the town of Rethymon have been known to shoot at police helicopters and cars and tax officials are often run off the island.
Earlier this summer, a helicopter carrying guests to a christening on a mountainous chapel made an emergency landing after gunmen mistook it for a police helicopter and opened fire.
The recent crackdown by police follows last week's arrest of a suspected drug dealer near the island's capital of Iraklio. Police seized cocaine and marijuana but a second suspect evaded arrest.
