I heard recently that aspartame would either be itself some psychoactive substance or could drive to some via chemical process...

At least aspartame seems to have lots of questionable aspect currently under inspection.

Someone around to comment ?

(I therefore pruchased some Aspartame with hope of converting it in something actually enjoyable !!!).

I only know that if you consume too much you will get diarrhoea. Enjoy!

and if you take a lot for a long time (like drinking 2l of coke light per day) it weakens your bones, and after they can break like paperboard matches...
this substance is indeed in research (science et vie from september I think) but I have never heard psychoactive effect....more bad effects for your body

Aspartame is essentially poison and should not be put in food. It is absurd that the FDA here in America allows its continued use. I assume it is also used over the world since nutra-sweet is everywhere. I've NEVER heard of it being used as a drug, only a really bad sweetener. Here is an excerpt of an article; the rest can be found at http://www.mercola.com/article/aspartame/dangers.htm.

Personally, I would suggest that you stay away from products containing this crap. That's just my opinion. If you want sweet, use sugar.

How Aspartate (and Glutamate) Cause Damage

Aspartate and glutamate act as neurotransmitters in the brain by facilitating the transmission of information from neuron to neuron. Too much aspartate or glutamate in the brain kills certain neurons by allowing the influx of too much calcium into the cells. This influx triggers excessive amounts of free radicals, which kill the cells. The neural cell damage that can be caused by excessive aspartate and glutamate is why they are referred to as "excitotoxins." They "excite" or stimulate the neural cells to death.

Aspartic acid is an amino acid. Taken in its free form (unbound to proteins) it significantly raises the blood plasma level of aspartate and glutamate. The excess aspartate and glutamate in the blood plasma shortly after ingesting aspartame or products with free glutamic acid (glutamate precursor) leads to a high level of those neurotransmitters in certain areas of the brain.

The blood brain barrier (BBB), which normally protects the brain from excess glutamate and aspartate as well as toxins, 1) is not fully developed during childhood, 2) does not fully protect all areas of the brain, 3) is damaged by numerous chronic and acute conditions, and 4) allows seepage of excess glutamate and aspartate into the brain even when intact.

The excess glutamate and aspartate slowly begin to destroy neurons. The large majority (75 percent or more) of neural cells in a particular area of the brain are killed before any clinical symptoms of a chronic illness are noticed. A few of the many chronic illnesses that have been shown to be contributed to by long-term exposure to excitatory amino acid damage include:

Multiple sclerosis (MS)
ALS
Memory loss
Hormonal problems
Hearing loss
Epilepsy
Alzheimer's disease
Parkinson's disease
Hypoglycemia
AIDS
Dementia
Brain lesions
Neuroendocrine disorders
The risk to infants, children, pregnant women, the elderly and persons with certain chronic health problems from excitotoxins are great. Even the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB), which usually understates problems and mimics the FDA party-line, recently stated in a review that:

"It is prudent to avoid the use of dietary supplements of L-glutamic acid by pregnant women, infants, and children. The existence of evidence of potential endocrine responses, i.e., elevated cortisol and prolactin, and differential responses between males and females, would also suggest a neuroendocrine link and that supplemental L-glutamic acid should be avoided by women of childbearing age and individuals with affective disorders."(4)

i agree: if you want sweet, eat sugar.
if you want to trip, eat acid

Yes that s it ! FDA puts GOOD stuff out of law, but leaves dangerous ones available... to make good business I guess.

Always the same song...

Tx everybody..

I would certainly not look into such matters IF I could get easely what I want... And I do eat suger to sweeten, as I would enjoy coke for getting high... IF I could ! Since our excellent society put the blame on it and I now have to look after alternatives... Shame !!! I red an article from a son of doctor, whom father was addicted to coke till he died... at 93 y.o. ! He had probably not known of any aspartame I guess...

I've read if you use it to much, it can couse cancer.

I've stopped using light products...

I think you mean Phenylalanine, inside Aspartame. It is said to improve sexual arousal, makes your mind more clear and can decrease depression. It is used as 'brain food' or mood enhancer. Look around on the internet and you'll find lots of info. I remember reading, body builders drink a lot of this because it acts as a hormone or something.

petfles a dit:

Thanks for the chimical name.
It seems having actually lots of (real or not ?) (harmful ?) intrications...

Whitouht being banned by our so-called health cautious governments...

I used it years ago for several years without noticing anything, but who knows ? I may have become "adultered" without notice - among the other many substances (not even speaking of processes !), more or less officially included in everyday's foods... Back to suger without any weight result ... This is probably one of the worse diet delusion at such a big scale.

I hoped it could at least be turned into something interesting ! Apprently not.
