Advertising should be BANNED from human consciousness and our conceptualizations entirely.
There is no way to justify its existence, really. Word of mouth is sufficient to any desirable product....
First, one must see it for what it is, which is a form of mind-control, repetitive, coercive, unrelenting. It goes beyond persuasion, way beyond. But we are so conditioned to accept it as normal that most of us never even question its existence. Why is it there? Who decided that it would/should be?
Where does it stop?
Even illiterate people aren't immune from it, if you can converse, they are in your head....
When I was in school, my psych professor thought that it was just the coolest thing in the world that peoples insecurities could be manipulated to make them spend money.
I called her out on it in class, and I could tell that she had never moved a single millimeter in the direction of actually THINKING about how damn manipulative that is. I told her that on a person-to-person basis that that would be exposed as wrong, and she just shrugged it off.
the unspoken assertion was that industry is allowed to do these things, in the name of making our lives better.
Well, that is all well and good, but don't lump me into your abstract category there....I'm not included in your 'our'......and the unspoken assumption (again) is that I am supposed to just 'go with the flow'
and be carried on these polemic rafts, out to sea, never to be seen
again ?
No.
Industry, as a mentality, is a rude, pushy, unwashed beast which drags humanity along in it's wake, for the most part, facilitated greatly by advertising.
It is representative of the lowest common denominator of humanity.
As such, it is a signpost of what we should be moving away from, not towards.
I have 73 channels of cable. At any given time, fully 50 channels are advertising, and the othe 23 are in various stages of coming up to,
returning from, or in the middle of, a commercial.
Collectively, we suffer a lot of boring, stupid messages placed into our heads by a nonstop machine of greed.
:x
