Ill try to keep this post brief. I recently brewed my first batch of aya using 50g shredded yellow caapi and 40g chacruna. I very lightly boiled the caapi for 3hrs, strained and boiled again for 1.5hrs before adding the chacruna for another 1.5hrs, strained and boiled everything together again for 2hrs. Total boil time was 8hrs for the caapi and 4.5hrs for the chacruna. Ive heard the chacruna doesnt need as much time as the caapi.
I used distilled water and only put a little squirt of lemon juice in the first two boils, none in the third. I strained each with cheesecloth and stored all 3 brews in one container overnight in the fridge. The next morning I poured all the liquid except a little on the bottom which contained a lot of muddy sediment and reduced for about 3hrs until I had about 3/4cup of liquid. I used a total of about 2.5 gallons of water for all the boils.
I followed the diet, didnt eat anything all day and drank 85-90% of the aya pretty quickly. I almost immediately felt a little "drunk" and nauseous. I became very sensitive to any light as the mild drunk feeling kept increasing until I felt like I drank an entire bottle of vodka. I could barely keep my eyes open I felt so dizzy. Then I felt as though I could feel my blood moving through my body, especially in my hands in fingers. I told myself that it must be working because Ive read some other peoples experiences describe the same feeling.
About 5min after I had that blood moving feeling I threw up the aya. This was about 20min after I started drinking, and about 15min after I had finished drinking. As soon as I vomited, I felt a lot better and all the effects quickly subsided except for the sensitivity to light.
So, what went wrong? Did I not hold down the aya long enough? Should I have drank it slower? Did I not boil it strong enough? It was simmering about the entire time. Was it not strong enough? Maybe I discarded some good stuff in the muddy sludge the following morning as I already strained and filtered it well?
Another thing I would really like to know is what was causing the effects I felt? Does it sound like effects from caapi, chacruna, or from a possibly successful brew that just had no time to take effect?
Should aya look like completely clean dark liquid, or is it normal to have a lot of very, very small particles in it?
Any advice would be very helpful as I would like to try again soon! Thanks.
