Sarah Palin, Polar Bears and Exxon Junk Science
Posted by kert_davies on 10/01/2008 11:01 am

Today, Guardian writer Ed Pilkington took a fresh swat at Governor Sarah Palin's use and defense of Exxon-funded junk science on polar bears in the State of Alaska's attempts to to kill the listing of the polar bear under the Endangered Species Act.

We have covered the evolution of this story on ExxonSecrets for over a year here and here with links to articles and documents of interest.

Much has been made of Palin's denial of global warming since she was nominated as the GOP Veep candidate, but no one has questioned her credibility for using 'research' that was funded by ExxonMobil, American Petroleum Institute and Charles Koch Foundation.

We are wondering if Gwen Ifill of PBS will ask Ms. Palin a pointed question tomorrow? or if Senator Biden has read the Guardian story?

Tom Kizza at the Anchorage Daily News has followed this story the best, filing two good articles earlier in the year here and here.

This classic ExxonSecrets map of the junk science authors from the Dyck, Soon, et al article shows once again the tentacles of the Denial Machine (see page 9 for acknowledgement of funding from Exxon and friends). Palin's goon squad cited the Dyck, Soon paper 6 times and even attached a copy of the article (pre-publication) to their 49 page submission to the Department of Interior.

All the background documents can be found on Greenpeace Investigations:

* Exxon funded junk science
* rebuttal by real polar bear scientists
* Alaska's submissions to Department of Interior

No reporters have questioned Exxon or API about funding this research and no one has gotten the scientists themselves on the record as to how much money they got from Exxon and friends and the marching orders attached to that funding.

'As I've said about the flag pin, I don't want to be perceived as taking sides,' Obama said. 'There are a lot of people in the world to whom the American flag is a symbol of oppression. And the anthem itself conveys a war-like message. You know, the bombs bursting in air and all. It should be swapped for something less parochial and less bellicose. I like the song 'I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing.' If that were our anthem, then I might salute it.'
WHAAAAAAAT!!!!!!!!!! Yes, ladies and gentlemen, this could possibly be our next president. I, for once, am speechless.

"There goes the neighborhood!"

I'm speechless too, an actual sane person to run for president

Once again, ellis stands corrected on multiple fronts.

ellis, I don't know if yopu realize this, but you are pretty transparent.

.....and the FIRST THING a heavy-duty psychedelic is supposed to teach EVEN A NOVICE USER is that resisting change is an exercise in furility.

This is a basic, fundamental lesson taught by all psychedelics. ( and, yes, I am qualified to chastise you on this subject. I have forgotten more about psychedelic lessons than you will ever experience.)

But I have known people, here in the deep south, who weren't changed, or helped, by psychedelics, regardless of the amount they were exposed....this, I have concluded, was because they weren't READY for help.

There is a message for you in there.

I have experienced that too a couple of years ago.

Very true. Some people just can't grasp what it is all about. It's not for everybody.

Historically, there have been many wars. Throughout time, people have invaded other people's lands and raped, pillaged and killed untold amounts of people. During that time, it would be better to be strong, and 'fight back', however unpopular that may sound, than sing and hope they don't kill you. Just a thought. There's more at stake as time goes on. Like a game of Risk. "Better to have a gun (military-strength) and never use it, than to need one and not have it." Again, just basic stuff that has ensured our way of life for the last 2000 years. Some things never change. Like my sexuality. Do you advocate a little change here and there also?

I believe in peace, love, individuality, abundance, freedom, and the right to pursue happiness as long as it doesn't infringe on someone else. I would protect those at all cost.
We could go on and on, but expressing my feelings on things draws arguement, when all along everybody's ideas are supposed to be equal. :?

I can tell. By your friendly responses, patient replies, understanding of differing points of view, profanity, acerbicly frantic keyboard rantings, etc. And esecially your inane ability to 'never always be right'.

Wow, I couldn't find this topic, actually had to do a Google search. -.- Anyways, more facts about Sara Dumbass.
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The beluga whales of Alaska's Cook Inlet are endangered and require additional protection to survive, the government declared Friday, contradicting Gov. Sarah Palin who has questioned whether the distinctive white whales are actually declining.

It was the Republican vice presidential candidate's second environmental slap from Washington this year. She has asked federal courts to overturn an Interior Department decision declaring polar bears threatened under the Endangered Species Act.

The government on Friday put a portion of the whales on the endangered list, rejecting Palin's argument that it lacked scientific evidence to do so. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said that a decade-long recovery program had failed to ensure the whales' survival.

"In spite of protections already in place, Cook Inlet beluga whales are not recovering," said James Balsiger, NOAA acting assistant administrator.

The decision means that before federal agencies can issue a variety of commercial permits, they must first consult with the National Marine Fisheries Service to determine if there are potential harmful effects on the whales.

That has the potential to affect major Alaska projects including an expansion of the Port of Anchorage, additional offshore oil and gas drilling, a proposed $600 million bridge connecting Anchorage to Palin's hometown of Wasilla and a massive coal mine 45 miles south of Anchorage.

The state does have serious concerns about the low population of beluga whales in Cook Inlet and has had those concerns for many years, Palin said in a statement. "However, we believe that this endangered listing is premature," she said.

Palin in April successfully lobbied for a six-month delay in a listing decision until a count of the whales this summer could be included in deliberations. That count showed no increase over 2007 numbers — 375 whales, compared with a high of 653 in 1995.

Federal regulators and conservation groups said further delay would be harmful.

NOAA said Friday the Cook Inlet population declined by 50 percent between 1994 and 1998 and "is still not recovering" despite restrictions on the number of whales that Alaska's native population can kill for subsistence. It said recovery has been hindered by development and a range of economic and industrial activities including those related to oil and gas exploration.

The National Marine Fisheries Service "will identify habitat essential for the conservation of the Cook Inlet belugas in a separate rule-making within a year," the agency said.

The federal decision pleased environmentalists.

"We can finally focus now not on whether the belugas are endangered, but what we can do to protect them," said Brendan Cummings, an attorney for the Center for Biological Diversity, one of the groups that petitioned for the listing.

Cook Inlet stretches 180 miles from the Gulf of Alaska to Anchorage. It is named for Capt. James Cook, the British explorer who sailed into the inlet in 1778 on a quest to find the Northwest Passage.

Beluga whales feed on salmon and smaller fish. They can also eat crab, shrimp, squid and clams. During summers, the whales, which reach a length of up to 15 feet, often can be spotted from the highways leading away from Anchorage, gathered at river mouths, chasing salmon that have schooled before a run to spawning grounds.

Beluga whales' natural enemies are killer whales, but something else has been keeping their numbers down in Alaska's Cook Inlet.

Craig Matkin, an independent biologist who has worked in south central Alaska for 25 years, said the delay in the listing had held up a comprehensive research plan to find out why the population had not recovered after subsistence hunting was curtailed.

The concern is not just in numbers, he said, but in distribution. Whales in recent years have been staying in northern Cook Inlet near Anchorage.

"They're just gone from these areas," he said of his own home near in Homer, near the tip of the Kenai Peninsula and about 100 miles from Anchorage. "Why they aren't coming down into this habitat is a question I'd like to answer."

Future development won't be helpful to the recovery, Cummings said, starting with the noise and pollution associated with industrialization of the inlet, which includes oil rigs off the Kenai Peninsula.

Global warming, changing ocean conditions and higher temperatures in salmon streams may be another factor, Cummings said.

The Port of Anchorage, helped by congressional earmarks secured by Sen. Ted Stevens and Rep. Don Young, has embarked on a $500 million project to double the port's size and replace its aging docks.

Environmental groups also have expressed concern about a planned coal mine 45 miles from Anchorage across Cook Inlet, where developers propose to mine 300 million metric tons of sub-bituminous coal, roughly equal to the energy of a billion barrels of oil, over 25 years. That would mean noise and boat traffic associated with building and operating a mine, a potential effect on salmon streams and more warming.

The Cook Inlet beluga whales are one of five populations in Alaska waters and the only one endangered. Other beluga populations off Alaska inhabit Bristol Bay, the eastern Bering Sea, the eastern Chukchi Sea and the Beaufort Sea.

....I read this apt description of the Palin admirers in the conservative camp, and of the dingbat herself.

Spot ON!

"...While watching Morning Joe and Pat B. this morning, as they were braying about the qualifications of Sarah Palin and having the audacity to compare her to Barack Obama, was a classic example of stags in rut and doe in heat. These men are so infatuated that their objectivity is in serious question...they are suffering from testosterone poisoning.

We keep hearing from them that Palin is more qualified than Obama, with her being the governor of Alaska (with a population of Memphis) and the former mayor of a small town of 7,000 people, and all. This is an intellectually DISHONEST argument...and it says more about those who are making it than it does about Palin (and it speaks volumes about her).

There is ample evidence that Palin is lacking a lot more than fun-facts and figures, as these guys keep saying that she just needs more training. Just watch her objective interviews again...both of them. She has the undeniable inability to think on her feet if pressed past the first layer of memorized talking points. This is undeniable even to the McCain campaign, as they have prevented any further objective interviews, realizing the impending disastrous effects.

She is so spaced out in her rambling recitations that the audience actually forgets what the question was. She has shown that she can "act" if given a script, but is a lost ball in high weeds if she has to wing it.

These weren't just "tough interviews" as Pat B. keeps trying to convince us, rather, they were windows into her brain of how she processes information. She blew the simplest questions if they probed into the foundations of her beliefs and thoughts. The inner workings of her brain is not a pretty sight.

This is in such sharp contrast to Senator Obama who has held hundreds of interviews and displayed a mastery of the facts, history, judgment and the ability for original thought.

So Fucking True.

Here's something scary; that stupid bitch is more conservative than Bush;

"McCain's vice-presidential pick, Alaskan Gov. Sarah Palin, sued the Bush Administration in federal court recently, charging it was too accepting of climate change studies which overstated the phenomenon's impact on polar bears. The result, she argued, would be a negative impact on her state's businesses, including oil and gas extraction.

Even as the White House has finessed its position on polar bears in the face of legal challenges and public pressure, Palin has led her state's efforts to block protections for the world's estimated 25,000 polar bears, of which roughly a fifth are believed to reside in Alaska.

"Listing the polar bear as a threatened species [under the Endangered Species Act] will have a significant adverse impact on Alaska because. . . [it] will deter activities such as commercial fisheries, oil and gas exploration and development, transportation, and tourism," Palin's administration argued in its complaint against the Interior Department, filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia Aug. 4.

In defending her position, Palin has discounted the findings of nine recent U.S. Geological Survey studies which concluded that the polar bear's habitat is threatened by global warming, and the animals could be extinct before this century ends.

Three of Palin's own state scientists reviewed the USGS studies and found them sound, according to internal documents released to an Alaska professor earlier this year under the state's open records law. But she has argued, in a New York Times editorial and elsewhere, that "there is insufficient evidence that polar bears are in danger of becoming extinct in the foreseeable future."

Palin's position, she wrote, is based on "a comprehensive review by state wildlife officials of scientific information from a broad range of climate, ice and polar bear experts."

"Essentially, she lied," said University of Alaska professor Rick Steiner, who wrangled with the Palin administration for months to obtain the documents. "She came out and said, 'our scientists agree the polar bears are fine and should not be listed'" when that wasn't the case, said Steiner, a conservation specialist who studies climate change. The McCain-Palin campaign did not make the governor available for comment. "

13 Percent of Voters back in March thought that Obama is a Muslim..

Imagine what it's at now...

Yeah, a lot of people in this country are STUPID xenophobic monkeys who cringe at change and are terrified of anything but an old white man.

To them I say:

Haven't you had ENOUGH YET?

What the FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU?

How about a hundred year war in Iraq?

That's what John 'Wayne' McCain would like.

Well, let's see; at TEN BILLION a month, times one hundred years...

I don't think even Cindy McCain and the Bushes have that kind of money.

When you have these irresponsible governmental fuckers spending OUR money like this it makes me cringe.

No one holds them responsible, either.....people are so fucking intellectually LAZY, I'll BET anyone money that I could stop a hundred Americans on the street, and be lucky if TEN of them know what the 'deficit' is.......why it's important that it be balanced, or any other relevant aspects of government...

What the executive branch of government is, and how it's different than the legislative branch....maybe, MAYBE two out of a hundred could tell you that...
