Hello there..

About 13 days ago I recieved the cubensis growbox (medium) from az*****.net
and made what they say in the instruction. Instead of using the filterbag I put it into my terrarium. Temp. is always between 21°C and 26°C degrees and humidity
is drifting from 90% to 96% and back... I light them up with an 18 watts tube, 24h a day. After this 13 days only 2 pins shows up and start to grow. What did I do wrong ?
Or do I just have to wait more...?

Thanks for reply...

I don't think is 24h lightning is necessary
The shrooms need some light
Maybe put your kit in the place where is some daylight and during the night is dark [/url][/u]

thanks for your reply...

do you think too much light (not sunlight) do harm them..? i saw some growing videos and they always had the light on.. but i will follow your suggestion..

do you think the substrate can be bad or somethink like this... ?

thanks

Give them some time and less light

Maybe you should not turn the lights on 24/7 - that's not natural. I'm not sure about shrooms, but other plants usually need some hours of darkness to grow well (just like humans *g*)

Don't forget to fan the terrarium with fresh air at least once a day (it's not in the azarius instructions, but it's important!)

13 days seems ok, give them a little more time.

shrooms arent plants nor animals :P
they dont need light to grow, they only need is as indication which direction to grow.

well thanks alot... will now follow your suggestions. keep you up to date what's going on.. i'm a little sad about that "first flush", anyway...

would you guys recomment to drunk the kit after I harvest this two shrooms, or should I wait.. but there are no pins anymore...

it's always nice to get some productive replys like these... thanks

You should always dunk the kit after harvesting. Another tip is to put the thing in the fridge at 6 degrees for the twelve hours you dunk it (a little longer is okay, but not more than 24 hours), so that the mycelium is 'awakened' For me this worked great. After a lousy second flush I did this and my third flush was about 140 grams fresh, my fourth flush is already starting to fruit and will probably result in 8 or 9 big shrooms (which is even more than the third flush).
Maybe you should also make sure the temperature doesn't get too high (I think 26 degrees is a bit warm for them, but I am not sure).

oh, yeah, and it makes sense that there are periods of darkness. Now the shrooms 'think' they are just living in one really long day and grow as much as they would in a day... It is the rhythm between the two that makes them grow.

Question: could one make the cycle (light-dark-light-dark) shorter (say 12 hours) and, more importantly, would this have any effect on the shrooms? In other words, can the shrooms be tricked into growing faster (perhaps in combination with some additives)?

they dont need light to grow, they only need is as indication which direction to grow.

I've been under the impression that fruiting cycle is triggered by four factors: light, oxygen, lower temperature and all the available substrate being completely colonized. So the light would actually do two things; tell the mycelium that it's time to fruit and also give the direction to grow towards.

When the cakes are fully colonized I usually just take them out from total darkness and let them get some light (placing them on a proper place in the room for example) and that tends to trigger the pinning. Only with one cake so far I've had to use lower temperature in combination with light to get the pinning going.

all the available substrate being completely colonized

My experience from the grow boxes was that if the mycelium has grown "too big" (= it totally covers the cake) then there weill be hardly any shrooms growing.
I got the small "PF TEK" cake from azarius recently and it was lying in its package for over a week (unfortunately). It was totally white with mycelium when I put it in the bucket and it didn't grow any shrooms at all.
Also the other boxes I had were not growing on those spots where the mycelium had already reached the outside.

So, the substrate should be totally colonized, but it shouldn't be over-colonized either.

oh, yeah, and it makes sense that there are periods of darkness.

I got the idea from cannabis-growing. During the growth the plants need at least 16 hours light per day - but if you give them more than 18 hours it has adverse effects! They need some darkness so they'll know it's night. That's the natural cycle of night and day and I guess mushrooms (even they are not plants nor animals) are used to that natural cycle of day and night as well.

yesterday i fan some fresh air into and switched the light off. so that they only get some diffuse light from the outside.. today morning three new pins showed up. i was totaly suprised about that. i will try to give them some natural rythm of light and darkness and will see. many thanks to you all... yepi

i think 24 to 26 degrees is ok... to the thing with the cooler, i've heard that this doesn't work with cubensis.. and i dont really know what strain it is. so i'll better don't do this.. but they grow now, fast...!

Sorry for being a total noob, but what is dunking?
I'll probably be getting my package from Azarius today (with a large cubensis kit)
so I want to know what this is so I can do it too to ensure that my shrooms will grow nice 'n big

Dunking is the process of putting the entire casing under water for half a day in order to activate it. After this, the remaining water is poored out, so that the mushrooms will start to grow.

The dunking resembles heavy rainfall what normally occurs in autumn. 12 hours is probably not nessasary 4 hours or so is enough. Removing the acces water is a good idea it would also occur in Nature because of good drainage.

The large kits from Azarius at the moment are quite good, I have some pictures of a shroom as good as a beer bottle, will post in a minute, just have to find it somewhere.

Dunking is great! I always dunk my PF cakes after the first flush. I just fill up the jar with the cake with water, make sure it is completely under water and then put it in the fridge for 24 hours (not freezer!). You can get away with a little more but around 48 hours your mycelium will be dead.

I'm gonna mess with peroxide and a bleach solutiuon soon cause using that in combo with dunking, you can beat virtually all contams.

Peroxide is easy to get, but it's usually 3% not 5...

Shit man, that's a nice big one.
127 grams, thats insane!
