In this week's episode of psychonautica, Max first mentions a new psychedelic podcast, 'psychedelic shaman', then, Max plays the second half of the talk started in psychonautica #44, from Annie Mithoefer and Sameet Kumar, called 'developing LSD, psilocybin and other psychedelics into legal prescription medicines'. First Annie Mithoefer talks about MDMA-assisted psychotherapy, using drugs such as benzodiazepine to combat anxiety encountered in MDMA sessions, other challenges of MDMA therapy, integrating anger and other strong emotions, talking about patient's emotions with them, therapy as a 'path', and a personal account of a course of MDMA therapy. Next, Sameet Kumar talks about using psilocybin to deal with end-of-life existential anxiety in patients with advanced terminal cancer. Sameet talks about the depotentiating effect of SSRIs on psilocybin, the medications which are usually used to treat cancer such as interferon, anxiety experienced by cancer patient's care-givers, the inclusion criteria for psilocybin therapy, and the setting of therapy sessions.
Finally, Max talks about the similarity of the process of medicinal psychedelic therapy, to ordinary recreational use of psychedelic use, the recent news of a mushroom-related suicide in Holland, and its implications for the proposed dutch mushroom ban, the effect of psychedelic drugs on the experience of spontaneous self-control, and more information about the recent update on the psilocybin research from John Hopkins university.
