Hey everyone....I was wondering if anyone can speak knowledgeably to this subject....what are the chances of catching problems, like being sued, for downloading torrents of copyrighted materials?

I'm just curious....

...and, how would you go about concealing it?

Would proxy alone work?

What about TOR?

?

?

Its all watched . Its all controlled .

We have just had a new law about file sharing passed wich means that the industry must pay the legal costs and not just use the court costs and massive civil court cost to ruin the lives of users . Now you are responsible even if you only suck one song . If the industry wants to they can prosecute you but they have to pay the costs and there is a legal limit that users can be presented with for each song . Since the new law there are 5 to 10 times more servers and not loads of honey pots with serial IPs . The data also seems to come down faster and with less broken bits .

Proxys are crap and slow . TOR is also crap....... if anyone with the means wants to know what you are doing .

Keep it small . Dont suck to much , to long or to often . I just sucked for three days on Emule , changing the server every few hours . I wont do it again for a few months . Remember that the people who are watching are interested in films , music and games . Software and books arent realy relevant .

I really think you are being too paranoid GOD, although I use mainly usenet so that I do not upload anything, I think you wont get in troubles that easy using torrents, there are just so many people downloading all kinds of stuff that you would need allot of manpower and money to be able to control it and prosecute the ones that are downloading.

I find torrents to be much safer than the old school methods (especially IRC!) there are a couple of programs out there that do a pretty good job of block all your information, although on a computer you are never 100% safe.

No, i don't think he is too paranoid, it's healthy to be a little cautious. Of course, they won't directly prosecute you, For now i think they more interested in hunting down some groups and websites on the internet who are spreading all the torrents around. But i think in the near future a lot is going to change, and it would be wise to be prepared, because trickster is coming. So i always say, don't be paranoid, just be fucking careful. I regularly download some torrents, but i close the torrent client software directly after if have downloaded something.

In Holland recently i heart something about plans for a new law, that's going to force the internet providers(they don't really like it) to shut down the connection of users who are warned for downloading illegal copyrighted material. Internet has become a great threat for a lot of industry's, governments etc. And believe me, they are watching us. Recently someone got caught, because private messages he send on psychonaut. Of course he did something illegal, but it says much about the increasing effort they take, to hunt down the illegal stuff that's taking place on the internet.....

Greets,
Mystic.

Also depends on the country you're in. Germany and the US I think are quite controlled and strict, I do not know about the other countries. I think what GOD says is pretty right. Does anyone know how safe rapidshare etc. are?

I officially state that I am not involved in illegal activities
:D

I think it's quite safe. as far as I know, it's only illegal to be involved in the process of uploading (at least here and in germany).
I always use rapidshare for music. it's fast and most of the time you find everything you want with google.

Rapidshare is fairly safe and as far as i`m concerned MUCH faster than Emule or torrents . You dont have to share anything and you dont supply anyone with illegal data . I`ve never heard of anyone getting problems through downloading from rapidshit . Up till a short time ago there were special firms in germany sending thousands of bills to users every month . It was 3000 euros a CD X the amount of people who were in the que !!!!!

Google is a honey pot . Information is power and they gather ALL the information they can . I dont use google .

I knopw people who use other share programs that are coded and based on hubs who have been offering more than 3 terrabits of music for years and have never had any trouble at all .

............. If anyone wants anything it would probably be a good idea to PM eachother and swap privately .

mhm yeah they are asses but what search engine do you use then? I dunno if yahoo is much better.

I also heard that but I also heard of people being accused for just downloading. I think it still is a violation of copyright etc.

"what search engine do you use then?"

I dont realy use search engines and when i do i use "Scrooogle" .

oh, I didn't know scroogle. Sounds like a good thing ! Well I need a search engine when I search for CDs stored on rapidshare.
which I only do for scientific reasons and completely legal

true, but I do :D yeah I already installed it, thanks.

If you can read German there is an article about sucking safely in "PC Praxis" 0608 pages 162 to 165 .
