So, is there people here that like it?

Personally I'm not much into the jazz scene. But I know some classic players, and really like some of their creations.
So I would like to know more about the jazz scene, and if you know some that wouldn't be included on the list bellow, I would be grateful.

Here goes the list:

Miles Davis, John Coltrane, John Zorn, Dave Brubeck, Duke Ellington (orchestra), Charlie Parker and Charles Mingus.

Stan Getz, Frank Zappa

It isn't really jazz jazz, but the bands Caravan and Hatfield & the North, both from the Canterbury Scene scene, use a nice combination of progressive rock and jazz.

Eric Dolphy, Mulatu Astatke, Thelonius Monk

John Zorn is a wicked bastard
Electric Masada, Masada String Trio etc etc (Zorn bands)

Bill Laswell ofcourse
started a project called Method of Defiance
For every track he put a drum 'n bass artist and a jazz artist together
nasty nasty stuff

Bill Frisell
Sun-Ra
E.S.T. (Esbjorn Svensson Trio, although Esbjorn died a few months after I saw him at the North Sea Jazz Festival)

I just love your taste man. Prog all the way !

Let me add :

Soft Machine (also Canterburry)
Return To Forever
Al Di Meola
Bill Bruford

I do like jazz: Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Dizzee GIllespie and Horace Silver... I think it's great music, great for diving into and losing track of everything. It just sucks you up.

I don't like jazz, imo it is musical masturbation and becomes embarassing in public.

Forkbender I think you are being narrow minded.

There are many "kinds" of jazz.

Listen to John Coltrane "Blue Train" and Miles Davis "Kind of Blue".
If you don't like them, then you actually don't like jazz at all.

There's some stuff of jazz witch I agree with you. John Coltrane for example, has some albuns witch I dislike. Though, he made great music too.

Well, ofcourse there is Jazz and there is Jazz ;)

Jazz, like techno, has a lot of sub-genres.....I HATE 'dixieland' jazz, and I don't even really care for a lot of the classics, but I really like Steely Dan, and there's a saxophone player named Dave Coz who has some good music....

Kenny G has a feww really good sax tunes too, even though most of his stuff is way too commercial.

Steely Dan kicks ass, though....(they aren't pure jazz, but they have a heavy jazz influence in all their music)

can you paraphrase your metaphorical understanding of masturbation?
Masturbation is an act of self-pleasure but as I see it (although I don't really like it either) the main drive of jazz is something completely different.

I tried listening to jazz on many occassions and actually went to a jazz bar a few times with some friends. I know these albums you mention, but I don't really like it. There are many kinds of jazz, I know, but I don't like any of the ones I've encountered.

What is the main drive of jazz then? I see it as a way to pretend to be intellectual. "Look at me, I know scales and act as if I like incongruent sounds! Doobiedoobiedoo!"

I'll stop spoiling this topic, as there is no need to start a discussion about an artform. Some people like it, some people don't.

Some of it is OK but most of it is "music" from people who have no musical talent and are tone deaf .

Steely dan are realy good easy listening but i wouldnt call it jazz .

I like real balck new orleans jazz .

alice coltrane, electric miles period, late 60's-early 70's herbie hancock. i like some wwii era bebop as well

I wont be original but... Miles Davis rocks ;P

I just discovered an EXCELLENT band from japan -

Soil & Pimp Sessions !
