From www.outtherabbithole.com:

Aliens, Psychedelics and the Transcendent:
Interview with DMT Researcher Rick Strassman

In the 1990s, researcher Rick Strassman conducted government-sanctioned experiments where human volunteers were given DMT — one of the most powerful and bizarre hallucinogens known. The data gathered from this study — and its implications for our understanding of consciousness and spirituality — are profound. Strassman’s thoughts and those of other researchers are found in the recent book, “Inner Paths to Outer Space: Journeys to Alien Worlds through Psychedelics and Other Spiritual Technologies.

I don't think the interview was that interesting actually, unless you're completely new to Rick Strassman's work. It should always be remembered that all experience reports published or recounted by Strassman refer to DMT experienced in a hospital room surrounded by medical personnel and wired to certain machines. From the interview it's also clear that when Strassman started his research (1990), his conceptual understanding of psychedelics and the realms of the human unconscious were quite limited. As he mentions in another interview (with Martin Ball):

"I’m a clinical psychiatrist. I learned clinical analysis and how to prescribe anti-psychotic medications, so in terms of the kinds of models that I cut my teeth on as a psychiatric trainee and subsequently, there were primarily biological models and psycho-analytic sorts of Freudian psychology models. In the meantime I had undergone a fairly extensive Zen training and study, which I felt, or thought at the time, gave me a pretty firm understanding or spiritual basis for understanding the psychedelic experience."

From his writings and interviews like these it's apparent to me that by the time Strassman started his DMT research, he had not read up on the psychedelic research that had been conducted in the 50s, 60s and 70s, mostly with LSD. And it seems he hasn't really done that in the meantime either. It's kind of weird to "continue the psychedelic research that was stopped in the 70s" without studying what had already been discovered around that time. Stan Grof is shortly mentioned on page 76 of "DMT Spirit Molecule" but only to back up the theory that the baby produces more DMT at the time of birth.

LOL, just now I got a reply from Rick himself: "I'm familiar with Grof's work, but haven't figured out quite how to incorporate our findings within it."

Hmmm, what to answer?

there's a thread at joe rogan's forum wherein they got strassman himself (username ricks) to register there and debate his theories about dmt with a guy named voodoo chicken. it's fairly interesting and allows getting to know the guy a bit.

Thanks, I'd be interested to read that. By now I've exchanged a couple of emails with Rick. I don't think I'll post them here though, maybe in a separate thread or something.

edit 1: Regarding the discussion at Joe Rogan's forum, damn, that's a long thread! Outrageous avatars by the way!

edit 2: Unless a newbie posts porn at the JR forum, he/she gets banned?! LOL
